13 verses on love
1 Corinthians 13 is one of history's most extraordinary statements on love. We hear it read at weddings and even sometimes at funerals. However, we rob the chapter of its power and influence if we disconnect it from its Christian context. Paul directed this statement on the nature of love to a dysfunctional Christian community: the Corinthian Church. Their division and pride were primarily due to a lack of authentic Christian love. Only when believers embrace Christ's mind (Phil. 2:5) and power (Eph. 5:18) can they genuinely love the brethren. And only when they love the brethren can the Church enjoy unity and fruitfulness (1 Cor. 13:4-7). May the Lord open our hearts to embrace Christian love and grant us the strength to carry out the sometimes-difficult duty of loving the brethren (Eph. 5:1-2; 1 John 3:18).
