Memorize 25 benedictions
Benediction comes from a compound Latin word meaning “good words” or “to say good things.” Biblical benedictions are unique verses that convey God’s blessing on His people. His “good words” to us assure our hearts of the Lord’s love, protection, and provision as we navigate the various trials of life.
In the Old Testament, benedictions were associated with worship in the Temple. The priests, as representatives of the Lord, pronounced God’s blessing upon the people. The tradition continues today with many Christian worship services ending with a pastor pronouncing a biblical benediction. These verses should not be limited to their traditional applications. They have many uses in the Christian life and merit “hiding in our hearts.” Consider some of the benefits of memorizing these verses.
Personal Assurance – Believers face a multitude of doubts during their pilgrimage. Does God hear me? Will the Lord answer my prayer? Will He keep me in salvation unto the end? Knowing Scriptural benedictions assures Christians in the face of potential doubts. These powerful statements nourish faith and yield confidence in “him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory” (Jude 1:24).
Comfort in Trials – Another use in comfort in seasons of trials. For a while, Christians are grieved by various trials (1 Pet. 1:6). Trials can often leave one feeling burdened, downcast, and despondent (Psa. 43:5). Benedictions offer hope to the afflicted, bringing sweet comfort to their souls. Memorizing and meditating on these verses allows the weary to “abound in hope” (Rom. 15:13) and become “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58).
Helpful Sharing – A final benefit is to share them with others. While all Scripture is compelling and worthy of passing on to family, friends, and co-workers, benedictions are especially important. Often the most opportune time to say a word to someone for the Lord Jesus Christ is during crises. When a family member is battling a terminal illness, a friend has been laid off, or a co-worker has lost a loved one knowing that nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:39) is a powerful aid to help the people for whom we care.
