As Timothy faced the challenges of adulthood, Paul reminded him of his upbringing and how “from childhood” he had known the Scriptures (vs. 15). The Greek word for “childhood” literally means “infant” and is used to describe the newborn Christ in Luke 2:16: “And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.” Clearly, no child is too young to begin memorizing Scripture!
Timothy’s “sincere faith” was cultivated from the cradle by his mother and grandmother (2 Tim. 1:5). Similarly, you have an opportunity—and responsibility—to plant the seed of God’s Word in the hearts of your children (Luke 8:11; Eph. 6:4). This book is designed to help you teach your child the first thing Scripture reveals about God: He is our Creator (Gen. 1:1). The God Made the Mountains poem guides you through various aspects of God’s Creation, with each page featuring an illustration and memory verse.
For children younger than two, read each page aloud and sing or play the song at least once per week. Encourage older children to repeat the Bible verses back to you and make observations from the illustrations. As you use this book, remember the twofold effect of God’s Word in Timothy’s life: it made him “wise for salvation” and equipped him “for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:15, 17). May God use His Word to draw your children to saving faith and prepare them for a life of fruitful service to Him.
