When Memorizing Isn't Fun Anymore

Memorizing Scripture is one of the most worthwhile ways to spend time. By hiding God’s Word in your heart, you will be well-prepared for the day of adversity (Psa. 119:92), well-equipped to share the Gospel (Rom. 10:17), and well-guarded against sin (Psa. 119:11).

But what do you do when the fire has gone out? Perhaps you can remember a time when memorizing Scripture was the highlight of your day. Your zeal for God’s Word was a bright flame that consumed your heart. But now, for some unexplainable reason, that flame has been reduced to an ember. The sad and simple truth is that you just don’t feel like memorizing anymore.

If this describes your experience, don’t be discouraged! Generations of memorizers can relate to your struggle. To be sure, a desire to memorize that ebbs and flows is “common to man; but God is faithful” (1 Cor. 10:13).

If your desire to memorize Scripture needs to be rekindled, consider these helpful "fire starters."

  • Ask God for help. If your heart needs a tune-up, look to the One who fashioned it (Psa. 33:15; 121:1-2).
  • Start with a clean slate. Don’t worry about how far behind you are. Today’s goal is not to make up for lost time, but to pick up where you left off.
  • Memorize something else. If you got bogged down on a difficult passage, set it aside for a few weeks and work on something that’s more familiar to you.
  • Don’t dread it. The act of memorizing Scripture is usually more enjoyable than the thought of memorizing Scripture. Once you finally get started, you might have a hard time stopping!
