Who Will You Memorize For?

Memorizing Scripture is not for me. Wait, let me try that again. Memorizing Scripture is not for me, only. The Word of God has been given to the people of God, not only for our instruction and encouragement but for the sake of Jesus’s praise and the benefit of others. You might be familiar with this proverb of Solomon: "...and one who waters will himself be watered" (Prov. 11:25). Consider how your efforts to memorize God’s Word equip you to encourage, exhort, and evangelize. We need to have God’s Word written on our hearts so we have words of hope to share with others.

What would it look like if you sought to memorize for the good of others and the glory of God? What if, as you memorized passages, you asked the Lord to use these verses to bless others? What would change in your Scripture memory routine if you saw the verses you were memorizing as words of truth and life that you could pray back to God while you sat with a family member battling cancer or a new Christian facing hostility for their faith in Christ? Memorizing Scripture is not just for me; it’s for you (or as we say in Texas, it’s for y’all). May we enter 2023 with others in mind as we strive to memorize God’s Word!

"Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing." (1 Thess. 5:11)
