3 Obstacles to Memorizing Scripture
Memorizing Scripture can seem like a daunting task. Many people feel like they are just too busy to memorize. Others don’t understand its importance, or they simply don't know how to get started. The good news is that these obstacles can be overcome!
Here are three common obstacles to memorizing Scripture and tips to help you overcome them:
1: I’m Just Too Busy!
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it can be difficult to make time for memorizing Scripture. We have chores to do, deadlines to meet, places to go, and people to see. We’re running in so many directions that before we know it, the day is gone and we haven’t set aside even five minutes to hide God’s Word in our hearts! In Psalm 46:10, the Lord says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Sometimes we have to step away from the busyness of life and just be still for a while to be able to fellowship deeply with God through His Word.
2: Wrong Priorities
Colossians 1:18 says, “And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.” Jesus and His Word should be our first priority, but daily time in God's Word is often neglected in favor of other things. There are so many things on your to-do list, but don't let spending time in God's Word be absent from it. Even something as simple as waking up 15 minutes earlier and going to bed 15 minutes later every day can give us an extra half an hour to memorize Scripture and spend time in fellowship with God.
3: Lack of Accountability
Many times, lack of accountability is at least partially responsible for us not memorizing. Every now and then, we all need an extra bit of motivation! Having an accountability partner not only gives you extra motivation to memorize, but it can also help you cultivate godly friendships. As Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” Having an accountability partner is an excellent way to help you memorize Scripture!
